Treatment of Ammonia Nitrogen Wastewater by Electrolysis

Dec. 17, 2021

High concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater is a harmful by-product in various industries. Many ammonia nitrogen wastewaters contain high salt content, which makes it difficult to carry out subsequent biochemical treatment and is currently a more difficult industrial wastewater to treat. In the efforts of people's research and development, titanium anodes are widely used, which can well reduce environmental pollution.

The electrolytic anode plate can produce a large number of O2-, H+, N3-, OH,- CH, CH2 and other atoms and ionic active groups, which can convert the ammonium salt in the wastewater into free ammonia to the maximum extent under the catalytic effect; meanwhile, it reduces the partial pressure of ammonia in the wastewater and other mixed gases, accelerates the desorption process and transfer rate of free ammonia release, so that the converted free ammonia can be separated from the wastewater quickly and adequately. Moreover, it also plays a catalytic role in the oxidative degradation of organic matter, and does not produce secondary pollution during the reaction process, which meets the increasingly high standard of environmental protection requirements.

DINOR has customized the titanium anode for ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment for some water treatment customers, and the mesh titanium electrode of the same size as the anode is used as the cathode. During operation, the degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen can achieve ideal results in the indirect electrochemical oxidation process in the flow-through electrolyzer under working conditions such as chloride ion concentration, inlet water flow, pole spacing and current density.

Process fundamentals

Ammonia nitrogen in wastewater exists mainly in the form of ammonium salt (NH4+) and free ammonia (NH3), which must be removed under certain conditions to maximize the conversion of ammonium salt (NH4+) into free ammonia (NH3), while using air to rapidly blow it off.

Technical features

●High removal efficiency, which can achieve the standard discharge of high concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater in one treatment (ammonia nitrogen from 6000mg/L to below 15mg/L in one blow-off)

●The ammonia gas with high concentration and large quantity can be recycled

●Can be used for pretreatment of wastewater containing phenol and cyanide (the efficiency of removing phenol and cyanide at low concentration is up to 90%)

●High removal efficiency for COD as well

●Low treatment cost

Continuous water inlet and discharge, simple process, easy operation and stable operation.
